Häcken have pulled off a surprise return signing. 28-year-old defender Josefine Rybrink has agreed to a new three-year deal with the club - until 2029.
What happened?
After four seasons in London with Tottenham, Rybrink left England this spring. Now she has chosen to return to Hisingen and the yellow-black shirt. The contract covers three full seasons and gives her a chance to contribute immediately in the Allsvenskan women’s league.
- It’s clear I’ve had a touch of homesickness. London is a fine city but Gothenburg is the best, she said in a club statement.
Rybrink has eight caps and one goal for the Swedish national team. During her first spell at Häcken she made 117 appearances and was part of the side that reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time.
Why it matters for Häcken
Sporting director Martin Ericsson praised the defender’s versatility and overseas experience. Rybrink can play both centre-back and full-back, adding extra edge to the defensive line.
- She’s an incredibly skilful player both offensively and defensively. With Josefine we get competition and depth in the squad, Ericsson said.
Rybrink herself points to the personal growth from her first spell. The bond with teammate Elena Sadiku and the club environment convinced her to take the next step - back home.
What comes next?
Rybrink will now integrate into the squad ahead of the autumn fixtures. With her arrival, competition in the backline increases, while Ben Engdahl and Filip Ohman remain sidelined.
- It feels like coming home. I really thrived here and those years gave me so much both as a person and a footballer, Rybrink said.
Häcken continue to build on their positive momentum under the head coach. The side currently sits in mid-table in Allsvenskan and eyes a playoff push.
